Genetic incompatibilities contribute to reproductive isolation between many diverging populations, but it is still unclear to what extent they play a role if divergence happens with gene flow. In contact zones between the "Crab" and "Wave" ecotypes of the snail Littorina saxatilis, divergent selection forms strong barriers to gene flow, while the role of post‐zygotic barriers due to selection against hybrids remains unclear. High embryo abortion rates in this species could indicate the presence of such barriers. Post‐zygotic barriers might include genetic incompatibilities (e.g. Dobzhansky–Muller incompatibilities) but also maladaptation, both expected to be most pronounced in contact zones. In addition, embryo abortion might reflect physiological stress on females and embryos independent of any genetic stress. We examined all embryos of >500 females sampled outside and inside contact zones of three populations in Sweden. Females' clutch size ranged from 0 to 1,011 embryos (mean 130 ± 123), and abortion rates varied between 0% and 100% (mean 12%). We described female genotypes by using a hybrid index based on hundreds of SNPs differentiated between ecotypes with which we characterized female genotypes. We also calculated female SNP heterozygosity and inversion karyotype. Clutch size did not vary with female hybrid index, and abortion rates were only weakly related to hybrid index in two sites but not at all in a third site. No additional variation in abortion rate was explained by female SNP heterozygosity, but increased female inversion heterozygosity added slightly to increased abortion. Our results show only weak and probably biologically insignificant post‐zygotic barriers contributing to ecotype divergence, and the high and variable abortion rates were marginally, if at all, explained by hybrid index of females.  相似文献

Aim The distribution of the genetic variation in long‐lived species is a combination of both, historical and current processes. In Nothofagus nervosa (Phil.) Dim. et Mil., the possible existence of multiple glacial refugia, the unidirectional gene flow along fragmented areas and the natural hybridization with the related species Nothofagus obliqua (Mirb.) Oerst. highlights as the most important factors responsible for modelling its genetic structure. The present study aims to find out the relative importance of these evolutionary processes in determining the distribution pattern of the genetic variation in N. nervosa. Location The study was carried out in north‐western Patagonia, Argentina. Twenty populations covering the entire distribution range of N. nervosa in Argentina were analysed. For comparison purposes, three populations from Chile were also included. Methods Genetic variation was detected using isozyme gene markers; diversity and differentiation parameters were calculated. A cluster analysis was performed and the correlation between genetic and geographical distances was tested. Results Levels of genetic variation were relatively high given the small distribution range of the species in Argentina. Genetic and geographical distances were not correlated and a longitudinal trend in the genetic variation was evident. Hotspots of diversity with rare and private alleles were observed among western populations, while hybrid seeds were found almost exclusively among eastern populations. Main conclusions The higher level of diversity observed in western populations could be related with the location of glacial refugia. Furthermore, it should also reflect low levels of gene flow given the eastward unidirectional winds. On the contrary, ancient and current interspecific hybridization processes would mainly cause the particular genetic constitution of the eastern populations. Evidence is presented supporting that glaciations and hybridization were the main factors shaping the distribution of the genetic variation in N. nervosa.  相似文献

Along-shore currents can propagate harmful algal blooms (HABs) over long distances in many coastal areas of the ocean. Harmful dinoflagellate blooms on the west coast of Iberia frequently occur when the Iberian poleward current (IPC) establishes on the continental slope. This has led to the suggestion that HABs could be transported northward by the IPC. To examine this possibility, the microplankton composition along the west coast of Iberia was studied in May 1993 coinciding with the presence of the IPC. The microplankton of the IPC was almost exclusively composed of small flagellates, with the notable absence of the harmful species usually associated with coastal waters. The primary influence of the IPC was to confine coastal microplankton populations to the shelf, where a downwelling convergence prevented their export from the coastal environment. Microplankton assemblages on the shelf revealed a north–south gradient related to different stages of succession. Earlier stages of succession in which diatoms were prominent were found on the northern shelf, whereas dinoflagellates were more abundant in the south. The toxic species Gymnodinium catenatum, which was only present in the southern shelf, did not show a northward transport associated with the IPC. It is suggested that the northward spreading of HABs along the west coast of Iberia must be related to the interaction between the IPC, which accumulates coastal populations on the shelf, and the latitudinal progress of microplankton succession that determines species composition. Thus, during the course of the season, HABs are likely to be observed in the south prior to their development in the north.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to compare an often-used method to measure blood pressure (BP) using a tail-cuff (TC) device, with radiotelemetry (RT) which allows to sample data on heart rate (HR) and BP in freely moving rodents without any restraint in behaviour. Data were collected in male normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats and in spontaneously hypertensive rats. Experiments were performed under 12:12 h light–dark conditions (lights on at 07:00 h) with simulated dawn and dusk for 45 min. Experiments were performed at 08:00–10:00 h (rest phase) and at 20:00–22:00 h (activity phase) under control conditions and after treatment with the beta-adrenoceptor blocker metoprolol (8 mg/kg). For TC, the Harvard BP Monitoring System (Edenbrigde, England) and for RT radio transmitters (Dataquest IV system, TA11PA-C40, DSI, St. Paul, Minnesota, USA) were used. Rats bearing the TC device were also monitored under RT. The experiments show that TC significantly increased HR and both systolic and diastolic BP in both strains and both at L and D. Metoprolol reduced TC-induced HR but left BP increase uneffected. The study shows that RT is the method of choice to monitor BP and HR in rodents, TC is not suitable.  相似文献

Studies of tidal flows in salt-marsh creeks in Essex, England, show large variations in water velocity during different tidal cycles, particularly between tides below, at, and above marsh level. Water level, velocity and suspended sediment concentration have been monitored at 5-min intervals during 700 tidal cycles during the year March 1982–March 1983, and the data are being used to calculate sediment budgets for the creek system studied. Completed analyses for two of the tidal cycles show a large positive sediment flux. Because of the importance of velocity in controlling total discharge through a creek cross-section, and hence its effect on total sediment movement, we cannot extrapolate from these two below-marsh tides to any general conclusions about marsh erosion or accretion. We use these preliminary data both to demonstrate our methods and to indicate some of the complexities involved in the analysis.Acknowledgements: This work has been supported by the Natural Environment Research Council. Large numbers of Indians from Oklahoma were screened for a variety of red cell antigens. Sufficient numbers of Cherokees, Creeks, and Choctaws were studied to calculate gene frequencies. These tribes originated in the Southeastern United States and were forcibly moved to Oklahoma. The Creeks and Choctaws have not been studied previously. A small number of Cherokees remained in North Carolina, and their blood types have been reported. The blood types of the Oklahoma Cherokees are quite similar to those observed there but one important difference was discovered. The data previously reported concerning the Eastern Cherokees revealed the absence of the Dia antigen. The present study found that the Oklahoma Cherokees do have the Dia antigen, although in a lower percentage than the other southeastern tribes. The Creeks and Choctaws share a linguistic heritage as well as having similar red cell phenotypes.  相似文献

The influence of cortisone on the part of leukocytes in the differential leukocyte count of peripheral blood of sterlet is described. The changes in particular groups of leukocytes are characterized quantitatively. To the hormone, the fish reacted by a decrease in leukocyte count, blastic (juvenile) cells, and eosinophils and an increase in neutrophils and monocytes. It is concluded that the stress hormone suppresses lymphopoiesis by the hormone-induced apoptosis of lymphocytes while, on the contrary, myelopoiesis activates it.  相似文献
